Once approved, people need to report changes and respond to reviews. SSI is especially sensitive to changes in income, living situation, and resources.

Key facts
- SSI changes must be reported by the 10th of the following month: wages, other income, moving, someone moving in or out, marriage, going into a hospital, jail, or institution, or money in the bank going over the limit.
- SSI wages can be reported with the my Social Security app, the SSI Mobile Wage Reporting app, or by phone.
- Overpayment: the person can appeal (if they disagree), ask for a waiver (form SSA-632: not their fault, and they can't afford to repay), or set up a lower repayment plan.
- Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) happen every few years. Keep treatment records current and return forms on time.
- A representative payee manages benefits for someone who can't. People can ask to change payees or become their own payee, and can report payee misuse to SSA.
- Help with shelter can affect SSI under the in-kind support and maintenance rules. SSA no longer counts food in these calculations; confirm the person’s living arrangement with SSA.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring SSA letters.
- Saving SSI money above $2,000 without an ABLE account.
- Not keeping pay stubs.
