Both are run by Social Security and both use the same medical rules for disability. SSDI is insurance you earn by working and paying Social Security taxes. SSI is a needs-based program for people with very little income and resources, whether or not they've worked.

Key facts
- SSI maximum federal payment in 2026: $994/month for one person, $1,491 for an eligible couple. Any countable income lowers it.
- SSI resource limit: $2,000 for one person, $3,000 for a couple. The home you live in and usually one car don't count.
- SSDI amount depends on the person's work history. There's no resource limit.
- SSDI has a 5-month waiting period after disability starts. Medicare starts 24 months after SSDI payments begin (right away for ALS, and special rules for kidney failure).
- SSI usually comes with Medicaid. In NC you still apply for Medicaid through DSS or ePASS.
- Some people get both ("concurrent") when their SSDI is low.
- SSDI back pay can go up to 12 months before the application date. SSI starts the month after you apply, with no back pay before that.
- Disability means you can't do substantial work (SGA, $1,690/month in 2026, or $2,830 if blind) because of a condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
Who qualifies
- SSDI: worked long enough and recently enough (usually 40 work credits, 20 earned in the last 10 years; fewer for younger workers) and meets the disability rules.
- SSI: age 65 or older, blind, or disabled, with limited income and resources, and a US citizen or certain qualified non-citizen.
- Disabled adult children (disabled before age 22) may get benefits on a parent's record.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Thinking there's no point applying for SSI because they've never worked.
- Giving up after the first denial. Many people win on appeal.
- Missing the 60-day appeal deadline.
- Not reporting income or living changes for SSI, which leads to overpayments.
